Green Initiatives

everyday style.  everyday green.

Here's what we're doing to help the environment.

Here at Kildonan Place, green is more than just a fashionable colour...  It's a way of thinking.  Here are just some of the environmental initiatives we've got going on around KP:

Reduced Lighting During The Brightest Months: All of our common area lighting is electronically monitored.  During the brightest times of the day, we'll only be turning on the lights when we need to.  We've got sensors to tell us when our skylights are bringing in enough daylight to light up the mall.  When they are, we turn off some of our overhead lighting to save energy.

We're A Little Cooler - And A Little Hotter: It takes a lot of energy to heat and cool an entire mall.  Thats's why we've adjusted the temperature slightly (cooler in the winter, warmer in the summer) to save energy.  It's only a degree or two, but it makes a big difference.  Plus, it's more comfortable for our customers.

We Recycle!: We have provided recycling bins to all of our tenants, and also have them in our administration offices, lunch rooms, and at Guest Services.  We are able to recycle everything you can at home - plastic, glass, paper, cardboard, cans & cartons - and more.  Even old store fixtures are recycled or repurposed whenever possible.  We can also recycle all kinds of batteries and light bulbs, minimizing waste and keeping harmful chemicals out of landfills.

Food Waste Doesn't Go to Waste: All our food court and food service tenants participate in our compost programs, by depositing food waste from their stores in designated containers, which are taken off-site to be turned into compost.  That's a lot of potato peels and stuff!  New York Fries even gives its used cooking oil to be used in bio-diesel vehicles!  The leftovers on your food court plate?  We're working on that.

We Saw The Signs: Since 2008, we have used recycled materials to produce our in mall signage.  Plus, when we're finished with the signs, we make sure we recycle them.  Our contest ballots, merchant newsletters, and other internal publications are also printed on recycled paper that can, in turn, be recycled.

Earth Time: We are proud participants in the WWF's Earth Hour movement, and celebrate Earth Day annually with environmentally-friendly initiatives at the mall.

It's In The Bag: Did you know Winnipeg doesn't have facilites to recycle traditional plastic (recyclable) bags?!  Those bags you deposit at grocery stores?  They get trucked elsewhere to be recycled.

At Kildonan Place, over 50% of our merchants offer bags that are either reusable, recyclable (even in Winnipeg), biodegradable, or made of recycled materials.

Getting Here Green: We encourage our customers to use public transit to come to the mall.  We are the only shopping destination in the area to offer park and ride spaces (we have over 150 of them).  The big box stores around us?  Nope.  Strip malls?  Nada.  Office buildings?  Zip.

With our park and ride spaces and bus loop, KP has devoted more of our property to transit than any other shopping centre in the city.

We have also recently introduced preferred parking spaces for hybrid vehicles, to thank our customers who choose a hybrid option when selecting a vehicle. We understand that there are many more fuel-efficient vehicles out there, too. But a busy mom with three kids, a hockey bag and a dog sure can't fit in a two-seater, and a farmer can't haul bales of hay in a sub-compact... So we thank those who, when buying a vehicle that fits their lifestyle, choose the hybrid option.  These nine spots represent less than 1/3 of 1% of our total parking spaces...

We've got over 2300 spaces in our lot, so no matter what you drive, we've got a spot for you!

We are constantly working at improving our practices here at KP to lessen our environmental impact.  There is more to do, and we're working on it.  Change doesn't happen overnight, but every little bit helps.

We welcome your questions and feedback.  Feel free to contact us with your suggestions, questions and comments... And thanks for living everyday green.
